Tasting Menu at 606 Congress - Courtesy of Blue Ribbon NYC

The other night I had the pleasure of attending a tasting event at 606 Congress in Boston. The restaurant, with chef Rich Garcia at the helm, is nicely appointed and was the perfect place to share a few new menu items. But these items were actually developed by Blue Ribbon, a foodservice group out of New York City, and then introduced to Rich and 606. Then we got to taste them.

Here's how it went...

After arriving and being feted with drinks - even some of those were created just for the restaurant - we got into the tasting. Here are some food shots and descriptions...

The Tasting Menu, Including Drinks

The Michelada. They make it with Harpoon UFO, Lime Juice and Hot Sauce. Tastes like a beer bloody mary.

Bromberg Brothers Blue Ribbon Cookbook. Some great recipes inside. We received a copy as a parting gift.

Manchego and Mexican Honey Toast. Light and divine. Still warm when it arrived. B+.

Another shot of the Honey Toast. The honey comes from Mexico and honey farms that Blue Ribbon operates.

Spicy Egg Shooters. Pickled peppers and olive oil mayo. These had a little kick, but were perfectly balanced. A-

Who thought Hummus could be fancied up? White Bean Hummus Toast. Best dish of the night. A

Another photo of the toast. Olives mixed in were perfectly salty for balance.

Fried Rock Shrimp. These popped when you bit them. Perhaps one of the best preparations of shrimp I've experienced lately. Just so well cooked that I was pleased. Taste was very good. B+

When I take food shots, I look for the best visual of the night. These win for that. While the Smoked Salmon Toast wasn't over-the-top as a winning dish, the fragrance was superb and the color was amazing. B

Some of the honey. This was delivered so we could drizzle it on the "Northern Fried" Chicken Wings.

The Wings - a Blue Ribbon specialty. Taste was very good and the best feature was probably the breading/skin. It didn't fall off by itself but clung nicely to the chicken so you had a very balanced bite each time you sampled the wing. B

They have some wine.
In all, I had a great time and am looking forward to trying some of the other Blue Ribbon venues. They have a top-end sushi restaurant in New York City that I'd love to visit.

Have you been to 606? What did you think?

May to December

This morning I woke up and realized I wanted to bring all my blog properties in line with each other. This meant doing some clean-up posts or brand new rants to make all my blogs current.

This blog is a juice builder for me as it has my name in the URL. But the last post here was in May, so that might be a bit of a misconception. If I didn't say a word since May, I'm guessing that Google won't index much or any of my missives.

So, here's a new post to bring the blog current. And perhaps I'll try and feed my other content here as well going forward so if you follow only this blog you'll see all the Jeff Cutler goodness without clicking around the Interwebs.

Thanks for reading!

Diane Darling - Book Party

Diane Darling is a friend of mine and is charming and upfront about her skillset and her mantras. She wants to see people succeed and has a vision in how that can happen. For even experienced networking and social media professionals, Darling's tips and insight can be valuable.

For instance, in her most recent book...

DISCLAIMER, I CONTRIBUTED A SECTION TO THIS BOOK

...Diane gets down and dirty in how professionals at all levels leverage their skills and outgoing nature to make connections and ultimately make themselves more successful financially and emotionally.

Give it a read...even if you buy it just to see my section...it's a nice primer for those who are a bit skeptical that traditional networking still can get the job done. I believe a mix of traditional and new media is the right route, but I'm a tech-head early adopter, what do I know?

ALSO, there's an event coming up on May 18 where you can meet Diane in person and get your book signed. I expect that I'll be there too and will sign anything you bring in - doesn't have to be a book.

Here's the info on that May 18 event.

Hope to see you there.

An event I was asked to attend

Want to buy a child? Seriously. It will only cost you a bag of millet. Leila was sold...traded really. For a bag of food that would feed her family.

If you’re not interested in purchasing a child, what about children who work as many hours a day as they are old just to support their family.

Alcides parents—both parents—died of HIV/AIDS.

Are these tales put on the airwaves and television to tug at your heartstrings and empty your wallet? No. These are true stories put out by youth filmmakers to raise awareness.

As part of Adobe Youth Voices and the Youth Producing Change Event in Boston, ten young filmmakers were armed with digital cameras and their own creativity. They made films to expose human rights issues they faced or had seen in their community.

With issues ranging from child labor to police harassment, these films aired at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts this past weekend as the showcase series featured in Human Rights Watch Film Festivals in London, New York and San Francisco.

Made possible by The Adobe Foundation, Youth Producing Change is part of Adobe Youth Voices and is “designed to provide youth in underserved communities with critical skills they need to become active and engaged members of their communities and the world at large.”

In just over three years, 20,000 children in 30 countries have taken part in the Adobe Youth Voices training programs to create media for social change.

What’s that mean? It means you learn a little bit about Human Rights Watch. You learn about The Adobe Foundation. And you learn firsthand what kids already know.

In films that explored these topics...

Clean water is a basic human necessity, yet corporations seeking profit are purchasing community water supplies around the world.

Shocked by the claim that more than half of all rapes happen to people under 18, young filmmakers searched for the roots of sexual violence and call for change.

Each night 1,600 teenagers in New York City find themselves homeless. Clemins and Jackie, two formerly homeless teens from New York City shared their stories of overcoming adversity and their work to create a community of support around teen homelessness.

Using new media tools, kids shared these videos and then the event was publicized via Twitter and Facebook. From what I read and learned about these kids, the only thing more powerful than their videos is their resolve to address human rights issues.

Michelle Mann, Executive Director of the Adobe Foundation, said, “By calling attention to human rights issues, these youth are inspiring audiences worldwide and demonstrating the power to express ideas, engage stakeholders and effect change through digital media.”

Anyone can do this stuff, but these kids are inspiring because they got out and explored the world around them, then they got in front of the camera to share their thoughts, their pain, their stories.

Pictures...especially moving pictures...are more moving when they engage and tell a story that matters. The films that aired this past Friday at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston did just that.

You can find out more a couple of ways. Give a click over to Facebook... http://www.facebook.com/adobeyouthvoices or jump on Twitter and follow @adobeyv to see what else is happening with Adobe Youth Voices.

Career change - quasi

I'm not dumping the writing thing, but I'm changing focus again. This entire year has been one of discovery and hard work. I've written a novel, I've covered major news events, I've established myself as a social-media expert, I've shed the shackles of the bland assignments and have taken on some fun stuff. Now it all comes into focus.

Over the next 45 years I figure I'll continue on this path. I plan to collaborate and consult with various corporations and show them how they can participate in the social-media world. My writing skills will be taxed as I plan to write a new book each year (it only took a month this year so why not dedicate one month a year to a new book?). And my income will be derived from my role as a social media consultant, syndicated columnist and features writer.

How's that sound? I like it. You can learn more by googling me - jeff cutler.

NaNoWriMo has begun

Just a quick update to let you know that National Novel Writing Month has begun and I've written 1667 words of my novel.

That's just for today. I have 29 days left and about 48,000 words left to go.

Anxious, worried, scared and excited all at once.

Boston Red Sox

Sitting here watching the Boston Red Sox and wondering how they keep digging deep and battling back in all their games.

Dustin Pedroia, who I saw down in Pawtucket a TON, just jacked a homerun in game 7 of the ALCS in Tampa.

It'll be fun no matter what the result.

Hope it doesn't go extra innings or Monday will come mighty early.

Later...

Jeff Cutler is Novel Ideas

Now it seems that there are two other Novel Ideas companies in the nation. I'm guessing the count is much higher, but when I opened my writing services firm on January 1, 1992 I didn't realize that the world would shrink so much as the Internet brought us together.

With my Novel Ideas writing site at Ideas2Words dot com - www.ideas2words.com - I attract a modest amount of business. But as you can guess, the reason my Novel Ideas site isn't at NovelIdeas.com is two-fold.

One - the name was taken. Pure and simple. Novel Ideas is a bookmark company in North Carolina. Good name. Fair product. I was too slow.

Two - NovelIdeas looks like Noveiideas or NoveLLdeas when written out. Having two of the same letter - unless you're google - in your domain name is bad news. So I haven't pursued it.

But now there's a writer marketing herself and her company - Novel Ideas - out in the western part of the United States.

What to do? Cease and desist? Nice letter asking her to give up the name? Combine forces and have two offices of Novel Ideas?

I don't know. Send me your suggestions.

Right now I'm on a writing sabbatical, but still have some billing through both Jeff Cutler and Novel Ideas. So the company isn't on hiatus and isn't going away.

It begs the question of intellectual property in this age of fast-moving people and concerns.

Keep reading...I'll let you know how it all turns out.

Gobbling up names

Much like the people who gather comic books and baseball cards, I've decided to start stockpiling intellectual property. Because Jeff Cutler is my name, I want to protect it from use by anyone else.

I'm also trying to get Jeff.com, but there's a guy in the southwest United States who owns that.

More to come...

Oh...in the meanwhile go visit Bowl of Cheese, my personal site, and Novel Ideas - my business site. You can also take a gander at TDF07 to see my exploits while in France this summer.
